Case study · Street-food brand identity

Frita Guy: street soul in a fez

Frita Guy is a Casablanca loaded-fries brand with a simple promise: The Street’s Favorite Loaded Fries. I built the brand around a character, a fries mascot in a fez, with a black and gold identity, a logo system, packaging, signage and the campaign that launched it.

The Frita Guy identity board: logo, tagline and the fez-wearing mascot.

The brand: loaded fries with street soul

Frita Guy is a Casablanca street-food brand built on one product, loaded fries, and one promise, written into the identity itself: The Street’s Favorite Loaded Fries. Its second line is shorter still: Street soul.

The identity had to carry that attitude on every surface a street-food brand touches, from the fry box to the shop sign to the Instagram feed.

The mascot: a fry in a fez

The brand has a face. The mascot is a bundle of fries with a big grin, a blue fez with its tassel, a black jacket with gold trim and a pair of sneakers. He holds a bowl of loaded fries in one hand and gives a thumbs-up with the other.

The fez and the trimmed jacket make him unmistakably Moroccan; the sneakers and the pose make him street. He carries the brand on packaging, on signage and on social media.

The logo: made to be read across the street

The wordmark stacks FRITA over GUY in chunky, rounded capitals with a heavy black outline: white for FRITA, yellow for GUY, with a single fry standing in for the dot of the i. A black-and-yellow checkered border frames the layouts and gives the system a pattern to repeat.

Colour: black and gold

The palette is short on purpose: a warm fries yellow, deep black and clean white, with the blue of the fez as the one accent. Few colours keep the brand consistent from print to screen, loud on a storefront and recognisable in a feed.

From identity to launch

The system went to work on packaging, signage and the launch campaign on social media. Every touchpoint reuses the same few pieces, the mascot, the stacked wordmark, the checkered border and the yellow, so a box on a table and a post on a phone read as the same brand. The launch reel, the fan favourite of this portfolio, is on Instagram.
